How Claude Code Actually Thinks - And Why That Changes Your GEO Strategy

LLMs don't think in prompts. They think in topics. Build cluster density, not prompt-led pages - that's what gets you cited.

There is a conversation happening in GEO circles about prompts. The idea is that if you write your content to answer prompts - the exact questions buyers type into ChatGPT - you'll get cited more.

The logic sounds right. It isn't.

To understand why, you have to understand what the model is actually doing when it reads your content.

The Mechanism Is Simpler Than You Think

Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini - all of them are doing one thing at the core level.

They are predicting the next word.

Not understanding. Not reasoning from first principles. Not reading the way a human reads. They are running probability across everything they've been trained on, and outputting the most coherent continuation.

This means the model does not think in intent. It thinks in topics.

Every word it generates is anchored to a topic cluster - a set of related terms, phrases, and concepts that appear together frequently in its training data.

When you ask it about B2B SaaS pricing, it pulls from the cluster of language that surrounds that topic: deal size, buyer roles, objections, competitors, case studies, features.

This is keyword-level thinking. Not keyword matching - keyword gravity. The model moves toward the terms that are statistically dense in a topic area.

What This Means for Content Structure

The right structure for LLM citation is not complicated.

Single node. Then long tail.

One core topic. A cluster of specific, related variations that branch from it.

"B2B SaaS pricing" is the node. "B2B SaaS pricing for enterprise," "how to price a SaaS product for mid-market," "B2B SaaS pricing page best practices" - those are the long tail.

This maps directly to how the model generates. It starts with a topic, gains confidence from the cluster density around it, and reaches for the most specific, credible thing it can anchor to.

A brand with 12 pages tightly clustered around one topic gives the model more surface area and more confidence than a brand with 40 pages scattered across 15 topics.

More cluster density → higher model confidence → more citations.

You do not need to reinvent content architecture for the LLM era. The model thinks the way SEO always said to build. Topic authority over breadth. Depth over frequency.

Where Prompts Break Down

Here is where the GEO advice starts to go wrong.

The assumption is: if buyers are typing specific prompts into ChatGPT, write content that answers those prompts. That prompt becomes your content brief.

The problem is what a prompt does to the model.

A prompt is a plot. It forces the model down one specific path. It collapses the probability space from a wide topic cluster into a single narrow thread. The model stops thinking in topics and starts executing a directive.

When you build your content strategy around prompts, you are writing for a constrained, single-direction version of the model - not the open, topic-level version that is actually generating recommendations.

Prompt-optimised content is too specific. Too many directions. The model does not cite it as a credible authority on a topic. It follows it as an instruction. Those are different relationships, and only one of them produces citations.

A page built around a single specific prompt is useful for one query. A page built around a topic node, with depth and cluster density, gets pulled into

dozens of queries - because the model recognises it as the thing it should reach for whenever that topic appears.

The Practical Difference

Prompt-led content:

"What should I ask my B2B SaaS vendor about pricing before signing a contract?"

This answers one thing. One buyer. One moment. The model follows it once.

Topic-led content:

A definitive page on B2B SaaS pricing - covering models, benchmarks, buyer objections, deal structures, role-specific considerations. This gets pulled into the pricing cluster every time that topic comes up. For any buyer. At any stage. Because the model's next-word prediction keeps landing near it.

The first is a response. The second is an evidence node.

What You Actually Control

You cannot train the model. You cannot change how it predicts. You cannot make it prefer you.But you can build the evidence environment it draws from.

That means:

Cluster your content.

Pick three to five core topics where you want to be cited. Build depth on each. Not volume - depth. Specific, factual, current.

Go long tail within the cluster.

Role-level pages. Industry-level pages. Comparison pages. FAQ pages. Each one strengthens the cluster without spreading it thin.

Ignore prompts as a content brief.

Use prompts to diagnose what topics you are being cited for today. Use them to find gaps in the cluster. Do not use them as the structure of what you write.

Keep the cluster fresh.

The model weights recency. Stale nodes lose gravity. A content refresh programme is not optional.

The Underlying Point

The brands optimising for prompts are writing for a narrow, directed version of the model. They will get one citation, once, for one buyer, in one context.

The brands building topic clusters are writing for how the model actually moves — gravitating toward what's densest, most current, and most specific within a topic area. The model is a next-word predictor. It thinks in topics. Work with that, not against it. The architecture has not changed. The channel has.
